Top Cardiologists Now Practice on Both Sides of the Bay

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals’ Pediatric Heart Center welcomes nine highly regarded East Bay cardiologists to its pediatric cardiac program. The addition of these specialists will allow UCSF to offer enhanced cardiac services to families on both sides of the Bay. The nine cardiologists are members of the practice that has provided cardiology care at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland for more than four decades.

The East Bay cardiology group includes Drs. Lisa Arcilla, Kishor Avasarala, Alok Bose, Gregg Helton, Neeru Kaushik, Gregory Kurio, Kathleen Newkumet, Hitendra Patel, and Howard Rosenfeld. Each of these physicians will join as faculty in the Department of Pediatrics of the UCSF School of Medicine, one of the top ranked medical schools in the United States.

“Our group has been dedicated to serving the children of Northern California for many years. In joining the UCSF program, we will be able to continue providing coordinated, community-based care to patients and families on both sides of the Bay. We look forward to working together to extend the reach of the combined program and offer family-centered care and expertise to all of our patients,” said Howard Rosenfeld, MD, division chief of pediatric cardiology at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.

With the addition of the nine new cardiologists, the UCSF pediatric cardiology faculty will have over 20 members with expertise in all aspects of pediatric cardiology. They will provide care at the San Francisco and Oakland campuses, and 15 other locations across Northern California. “We welcome our new colleagues and see this as an important step in the growth of our Pediatric Heart Center, allowing us to provide expanded patient access to the broadest range of cardiac services, research, and world-class care,” said Donna M. Ferriero, MD, chair of pediatrics and physician-in-chief of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco.

The UCSF Pediatric Heart Center is an integrated program offering comprehensive, patient-centered cardiac care to infants, children, and adolescents with heart disease. The UCSF Pediatric Heart Center also provides prenatal care for pregnancies complicated by heart issues and adults with congenital heart disease. The UCSF program is ranked among the top pediatric cardiology and heart surgery programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

In September 2015, renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, V. Mohan Reddy, MD, was appointed chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery and co-director of the Pediatric Heart Center at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco. Dr. Reddy is recognized nationally and internationally in pediatric cardiac surgery with particular expertise in neonatal surgery. He will lead the cardiothoracic surgery program within UCSF’s integrated Northern California Pediatric Heart Center.

Pediatric Heart Center programs include: the Arrhythmia Center, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Cardiothoracic Surgery Program, Cardiovascular Genetics Center, Echocardiography, Fetal Cardiovascular Program, Interventional Cardiology Program, Pediatric and Congenital Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory, Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, and Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program.
