It was summertime when 11-year-old Rhydian began experiencing painful swelling on his upper arm. By fall, he was diagnosed with a rare muscle cancer and began aggressive treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

For Rhydian, UCSF went beyond saving his life, providing the emotional support he needed during such a difficult time: "They did all these extra wonderful things to make me feel better and special," he says, recalling a surprise manatee stuffy from the orthopedics team, trading jokes with his oncologist, playground time with child life, and his favorite music on the speakers during radiation. Now that treatment is behind him, Rhydian wants to find ways to give back.
