Our History

In 2014, two exceptional institutions—UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco and Children’s Hospital Oakland—joined forces to become one of the country’s top five enterprises of pediatric care and research.

Together, we are UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, sharing a mission to promote the health of children from all over the Bay Area, across the United States, and around the globe. Our affiliation creates one of the world’s most comprehensive systems of pediatric medicine, offering leading-edge care and—through ongoing investment in next-generation therapies—hope for young people and the families that love them.

As part of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)—one of the world’s leading health sciences universities, founded in 1864—UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco shaped the course of 20th-century pediatric medicine through compassionate, collaborative care, and discoveries translated into leading-edge treatments and cures. That tradition continues into the 21st century.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland—formerly Children’s Hospital Oakland—builds on over a century of excellence by bringing genuine passion to the care of every child, and to the laboratories where scientists and physicians partner in transformative research that paves the way for tomorrow’s pediatric medicine.
